Plaster dress; Portfolio photos

Staging Layout; More detailed

I have done this piece from looking at both photos of verona and the layout i have already done on the computer. This shows what the actual look of the fixed staging would be rather than just its placing. I am really happy with the result.

Paper wig photos; Portfolio

First new board done in my portfolio, one down several more to go.

Casa di Giulietta

A big tourist destination in Verona, said to be where the Capulet family lived. Although this has been said there is not actually any proof that the family ever lived there and if they did there is not proof that a young girl named Juliet existed. It wasn't until 1905 that the city bought the overgrown garden and created this sort of museum, rumour has it this was once actually a whore house.
These are just two of the images from inside the house. Even though the whole story round this building may be fictional I think its helpful to look at these to give me an idea of what to put into the video projection design.

Stage design; Romeo and Juilet

I have looked at the different layout of staging and already existing ones that have been used in the performance of Romeo and Juliet. I first did some sketches and then transferred some onto the computer so that they had a cleaner finish to them.
These are the first two that I transferred onto the computer, I preferred the bottom one so worked on it to get what I think will be the basics of my final stage design. This image shows the skeleton of my final look for the stage.

Cart Macabre; Living structures

Cart Macabre is a nightmare fairground ride through a dreamlike landscape. It’s a restless exploration of isolation and disorientation, an act of faith on the part of the audience. In total darkness, 32 people are shepherded into eight wooden carts and moved through a succession of theatrical environments. The carts – their smell, their sounds, the sensation of their movement – become an inseparable part of a multi-sensory experience.

Paper wig; Finished

I have eventually finished the paper wig which I started well before christmas. I just need tophotograph it properly so that I can use it as part of my portfolio.

Wool structure; Session 3

I think that this is the last session I am going to focus on doing this piece as its not totally relevant to where I am going with my ideas. Ive managed to get the piece off the box and mannequin but found the bottom wasnt structured enough to hold its own weight. Ive put it back on the box and added further wool to the skirt which willf hopefully mean it keeps its shape when I take it off next.

2009 Alternative Miss World gallery

http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/gallery/3212/8/alternative-miss-world-2009

Some photos of the contestants fromt the 2009 AMW.

Andrew Logan; Guardian interview

Talks about how the Alternative Miss World got started, how he feels about it, the criteria of the show and what the whole things about. I think it was interesting to watch this because it has different footage of the shows to what 'The Britich Guide to Showing Off'had in it.

Wool structue; Session 2

This is where I am up to with this experimentation. I think that, as it is not a complete finished piece, it is near enough finished. It might just need a few more strands around the skirt to strengthen it. I think that it will look good once it comes off the mannequin and the box.

Edge Hill University

First University Interview!!!!!!

I’ve applied for Design for Performance, what do I need to do to prepare for my interview?

Your interview will focus upon your portfolio and your creative response to the following:

Produce the overall visual concept for a production of Romeo and Juliet. The production can take whatever form and it may be placed in a space or a theatre of your choice.

What would your production look like? Demonstrate how you think visually and how you engage with the notion of a performance?

This is not a test of your skills in Design for Performance – but we will be looking at your creative response, your problem solving and your engagement with the idea of a 3D space.

This will allow the design tutor to discuss with you your interests and ambitions. You will also be asked to undertake a short piece of writing on an aspect of design for performance.
--------------------------------------------

This is what I need to do for my interview. I shall just have to see how it all goes.

Ziad Ghanem

http://www.ziadghanem.co.uk/
'His innovative vision has led to many collaborations with a diverse range of businesses, publications and artists. While Ziad’s models too, are selected for their unique attributes and personalities and arrive in a multitude of shapes and sizes.'
Quote off of Ghanem's website.
These are just a few images from all on Ziad Ghane's shows through the years.I think that looking at his work can interlink with the Alternative Miss World, Ghanem doesn't conform to the usual thin, tall stereotypical models.

Andrew Logan's;The alternative miss world

http://alternativemissworld.co.uk/
Started in 1972, The Alternative Miss World is not about beauty - it's about transformation - and when it comes to costume absolutely anything goes. Like the real Miss World there is day wear, swim-wear and evening wear and the all important personality interview! But Logan refuses to let anyone rehearse, and anything can - and often does - happen.

Wool structure

I am taking the idea of the plaster dress structure I made, as part of a Rake's Progress, into our Alternative Miss World project. I like the fact that it is a self supporting piece, not having to have undergarments to help it hold its shape. The plaster though was not wearable so I am going to play about with fabrics and materials to see which have the strength but are wearable. Alongside my research and designing for the AMW project the choices of materials and the structures I create are also key so experimenting with things like this means that I will have strong end designs and garments.

This is where I am up to yet with the structure. Up to yet I think that it is looking okay. The main problem with it is that it doesn't hold its own weight yet. It needs more layers of wool and PVA on it to make it stronger.

Life drawing; Session 6

First session back after the Christmas break

These are four of the drawings that I did during this session. I don't think that they were to bad to say that I have had three weeks off from life drawing sessions.
This was the final piece that I did of the session, Instead of looking at the detail I looked at the angles of the body. The proportions of it aren't brilliant but I think it's interesting just to look at the basic block figure.

This is my favourite of all the drawings that I did in this session. Its one of very few that I have actually managed to get the whole of the figure in.

Finished newspaper cover

This is my final design for the front cover of my newspaper. I think that overall it look good, might be better if I had put a few adverts on it just to make it more realistic. I think the colours I have used work okay in each image and as a whole. The main thing that I struggled with was the type, fitting it into the boxes. I managed to get it all to fit by tweaking small parts. I took some of the colour out of the background as well, I thought it was overpowering, it looks much better as it is now.

The Harlot; Second costume; Final design

This was the first design I came to that I thought would be my final design. I looked at it though and thought that it was a bit to clean cut for a harlot. It needed to be more unfinished, more tears, rips and patches on it.
This is my final design for the second outfit for the Harlot, in a harlots progress.
